Bio
It would be hard to place native Texan and life-long choir boy, Neeki Bey in a particular culture, genre or even era. His musical background ties together jazz piano, choral music, African drumming, along with gospel influences and a hint of country twang. His musical bio would stand on its own, but when you add in his passions for travel, exploring cultures, speaking German, and an uncanny knack for picking up phrases of myriad languages, an encounter with Neeki is a brush with world music set in the framework of global perspective.
As he travels throughout the US, Europe, and Africa, Neeki often experiences music's transforming power. Through his professional endeavors as performer, producer, composer and conductor, Neeki connects those around him to the stories and rhythms of people around the world. He currently serves as musical guru for
Jazz Mosaic, an eclectic spiritual service of music and meditation. Neeki blends the skills of a priest preserving the sacred traditions of indigenous cultures and the insights of the prophet who calls for bold new ways to share musical gifts across boundaries.
A natural educator, Neeki puts his global perspective into local action through community service. Working with
Southern Methodist University, Neeki is worship director for
Perkins Youth School of Theology. As a volunteer instructor for
Pre-GED School, Neeki helps immigrants fully integrate into mainstream Dallas as they learn English fluency and literacy. Neeki also serves as an advisor for
LaReunionTX, a local arts organization working to design a sustainable artist residency. He adjudicates and lectures for the annual
NAACP Act-So competition and conducts the
Men of the Houston Boychoir.
A
SESAC affiliated composer, Bey writes and arranges global music (hymns, anthems, jazz, etc.), with ongoing research into the fusion of traditional African music and Western forms. He maintains an active schedule as a solo performer, worship leader, jazz pianist and musical director. Neeki has performed on stages with many celebrated artists including Celine Dion and Jason Mraz. Bey's most recent production work includes songs on
BabyJamz, a contemporary kids music project by Music World featuring artists Trin-I-tee 5:7 and Beyonce among others.
Neeki's education includes studies at the
Houston High School for the Performing and Visual Arts,
Morehouse College,
Institute for European Studies - Vienna, and
Southern Methodist University.
